Chapter Fourteen
Scott was a bit nervous about Nick meeting Bobby and Lexi. He wanted his friend to like them. While he knew he had just met them, he could see himself easily falling in love with them, maybe even building a bigger family with all of them together with another child or two. He wondered how Lexi would feel being a big sister.
Shortly before one, the doorbell rang. Bobby had asked if he could be the one to answer the door, saying it was more for Scottâs safety. He didnât trust Scottâs family, and he couldnât argue with Bobbyâs logic.
âHi, how can I help you?â
âHello, sorry to bother you, sir, but can we come in?â The deep male voice wasnât one that Scott recognized, so he turned to Lexi, and before he could say anything, she ran over to him.
âCertainly, but may I ask who you are, and why youâre here?â Bobby demanded to know before he would let them in the house. âI have my daughter in here, so I would like to know who you are before I let you in.â
âOf course.â Scott could hear some rustling. âMy name is Detective Charles Klyne, and this is my partner, Detective Frank Murdock. Weâre here about the reported kidnapping of a Mr. Scott Hamilton.â
âWhat?â Scott cried out. âI havenât been kidnapped. Iâm here as an invited guest.â
âPlease, give me a moment to unlock the door, and youâre welcome to come in,â Bobby said, closing the door and opening the chain, letting the police officers in.
Scott pulled Lexi closer when she let out a small whimper, then he whispered to her, âDonât worry, honey, your dad and I will get this sorted out. Itâs going to be okay, promise.â
âOkay,â she whispered back, staring at the officers.
âHow can we help you?â Bobby asked as he led the officers into the living room, where he turned off the TV from the movie they had been watching.
âWell, this is awkward.â The detective who had the lighter hair color, turned and introduced himself to Scott. âIâm Detective Charles Klyne. The reason my partner and I are here is one Thomas Hamilton reported that his brother had been kidnapped and was being held here against his will.â
âOh.â Scott sagged back into the chair he was sitting in. âWhy would he do that? When I refused to go with him last night?â
âSir.â The dark-haired detective, who Scott assumed was Frank Murdock, spoke up. âWhat do you mean ârefused to go with him last nightâ?â
âThe meanie came here and tried to take Scott away.â Lexi crossed her arms over her chest, giving the police officers a sour look. âHe was swearing at us and even looked like he was going to hit me. I called the police to come here because he was loud and swore at me.â
âThe police were called here last night?â The officers looked at one another, sharing a look that only officers did.
âYes, sir,â Bobby said. âAs the homeowner, I asked that he be escorted off the property and not be allowed back, him or anyone else in his family.
